"Harry Hamilton Johnston (1858-1927) was born in south London, England, the son of John Brookes and Esther Laetitian Hamilton Johnston and a great-great-grandson of John Johnston, a 'burgher\" of Glasgow. He studied art and languages and at the age of eighteen began a series of travels in Europe and Africa, chiefly as a student of painting, architecture and languages. He married Winifred Irby in 1883. He was appointed British vice consul in Camerron and the Niger delta in 1885 and was acting consul for the area by 1887. He served in various capacities for the British goverenment, chiefly in various parts of Africa. In Africa he also studied zoology and made large collections of flower and fauna for the British Museum. In 1900 he was instramental in discovering and naming the okapi, a mammal related to the giraffe. He received a number of awards for his zoological work and drawings of African subjects.
