  • "For nealy a millenium, vigorous and soulful klezmer music was an integral part of Jewish life in Eastern Europe. In the early decades of this century, this musical tradition continued to flourish in America. Klezmer musicians learned tunes by ear and adapted Gypsy, Ukrainian and Greek melodies as well as the jazz heard in the U.S. Assimilated and commercialized, however, this musical expression of Jewish culture was virtually extinct until a mid-70's revival. This film traces the efforts of two contemporary groups, Kapelye and the Klezmer Conservatory Band to recover a lost history. The camera follows members in rehearsal, taking Yiddish lessons, meeting with elderly klezmer musicians, attending a Jewish wedding, studying at a klezmer camp, and appearing at a live radio concert on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion."

  • "Klezmer, the lively and eclectic instrumental dance music of Eastern European Jews, is being rediscovered. This film focuses on two accomplished Klezmer Bands, Kapelye of New York City and the Klezmer Conservatory Band of Boston. Incorporating Gypsy, Ukrainian, and Greek melodies, klezmer found its way into Yiddish theatre, then went "underground" in the 30s and 40s. In the 70s, klezmer was revitalized by young musicians who brought to it their training in classical jazz, and folk idioms, performing in venues as diverse as klezmer camps and The Prairie Home Companion. Bringing the past into the present is at the heart of the klezmer revival, and this film shows three generations of musicians involved in this process."@en
  • "Shows these two klezmer bands both in performance and in the process of re-discovering this traditional music through its Yiddish, Eastern European, and early 20th Century American roots. Three generations of Klezmer musicians are shown working together to revive this vigorous and soulful expression of Yiddish culture which orginated in Eastern Europe and was influenced by Gypsy, Greek and other old world melodies, as a well as American jazz, before almost dying out."
