After the conquest of Manchuria in 1931, the Japanese military slowly expanded its control over the civil government. Continued Japanese expansion and Chinese resistance led to the outbreak of war between the two in July 1937 and ended with the bombing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Japan's surrender to the Allies.
