  • "Summary: Correspondence, publications, research notes and notecards including drawings, and a small amount of photographs received with correspondence. The collection chiefly consists of research notes and most of these are sketchy. Topics with greater coverage include trade goods especially trade beads and silverwork, California gold rush emigration, Spanish military uniforms, Fort Union, New Mexico, and La Purisima Mission. There are notes and reports from a Channel Island archaeological survey, 1939-1941, a sketchbook of Canyon de Chelly pictograph drawings, original 1889 documents about a lawsuit against Fort Huachuca for selling ice to the public, and a sale prospectus with photographs relating to Baca Float #3, Santa Cruz County, Arizona circa 1940. Also present are typescripts of David Weber's thesis, "Early New Mexico Fur Trade, 1821-1828," and Mormon Battalion journal of Henry Standage (1846-1847) and Army of the West journal of Dr. John J. Griffin (1846-1847), and Civil War letters of Sgt. W.S. Woodhead. Original letters of Dr. C.H. Alden relate his experiences at Fort Garland, N.M., 1860 to 1863. Correspondents are chiefly archaeologists and museum staff. Parks Service correspondence relates to exhibits, museum plans and excavations at the Petrified Forest, Tumacacori, and Bandelier. Richard Van Valkenburgh's correspondence is interesting for its coverage of Navajo research and his comments on fellow archaeologists. Correspondence with the Works Progress Administration concerns the authenticity of the Pauline Weaver inscription at the Casa Grande National Monument."
