The Virginia papers

The Virginia Papers were collected and partly arranged by Lyman C. Draper with the idea of publishing a revised edition of the work of Rev. Dr. Joseph Doddridge, Notes on the Settlements and Indian Wars of the Western Parts of Virginia and Pennsylvania, 1763-83. Draper contemplated adding to a reprint of Doddridge's book many facts of early border history in the Valley of Virginia, in the Greenbrier settlements, and on the upper Ohio River and its southern tributaries. The first volume of these papers includes memoranda and notes for the proposed new edition of Doddridge's Notes; copies of family letters, poems, and a biographical sketch of Dr. Joseph Doddridge; a portion of the manuscripts of Stuart's "Narrative of Indian Wars and Settlements" (published in Virginia Historical Collections, i; also in Magazine of American History i), found among Dr. Doddridge's papers; the narrative of John Bingeman (1763); letters of a "Russian Spy," published in the Chillicothe, Ohio, Gazette (1825-26); an account of the captivity of the Doddridge children (1778); letters and an obituary of Philip Doddridge; and original Indian novel by Joseph Doddridge, called Tutela; and Draper's correspondence with Miss Narcissa Doddridge (1866-69) relating to the proposed publication.
