  • "In February 1965, during a small demonstration in Marion, Alabama, Jimmy Lee Jackson, was shot by an Alabama State trooper. He died a few days later. The subsequent landmark march from Selma to Montgomery was planned in tribute to his memory. In March 1965, Rev. James Reeb and two other Unitarian ministers traveled to Selma, Alabama after an attempt to stage a protest march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama failed. Rev. Reeb of Boston was attacked and murdered by four locals. In 1965, Viola Liuzzo, a housewife from Michigan, came to Alabama to participate in the Freedom March from Selma to Montgomery. She was shot and killed by members of the Ku Klux Klan while driving after the march. In 1966, members of the Ku Klux Klan set fire to the home of Vernon Dahmner, president of the local chapter of the NAACP."
