A Place called Chiapas

A Place Called Chiapas is a documentary exploring the elusive and fragile revolution led by Zapatista National Liberation Army rebels in Chiapas, Mexico. In 1994, the Zapatistas and their charismatic leader, guerrilla poet Subcomandante Marcos, launch an uprising to protest the plight of the indigenous Maya people. The Mexican government lead by President Zedillo responds with 30,000 troops, and right-wing death squads terrorize Zapatista sympathizers.

  • "On January 1, 1994, the Zapatista National Liberation Army--made up of impoverished Mayan Indians from the state of Chiapas--took over five towns and 500 ranches in southern Mexico. The government deployed its troops, and at least 145 people died in the ensuing battle. Fighting for indigenous Mexicans to regain control over their lives and the land, the Zapatistas and their charismatic leader, guerilla poet Subcomandante Marcos, began sending their message to the world via the Internet. The result was what The New York Times called "the worldʼs first postmodern revolution." Years into the uprising, filmmaker Nettie Wild traveled to the jungle canyons of southern Mexico to film the elusive and fragile life of the rebellion. Her camera effectively and movingly captures the personal stories behind a very public clash of traditional culture and globalization."

  • "On January 1, 1994, the day the North American Free Trade Agreement came into force, the indigenous Zapatista National Liberation Army took over five towns and 500 ranches in southern Mexico. The director of this video travels throughout the jungle canyons of Chiapas to observe the movement of a revolution threatened by right-wing paramilitary death squads."
  • "Documentary on the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas, Mexico filmed over an eight month period. The bravery and creativity of the indigenous people in this area of Mexico is breathtaking. They have managed to tell the world their story, and survive the presence of the well-armed Mexican troops and paramilitary forces."@en
  • "The uprising on January 1st 1994, by the Indios in Chiapas, one of the poorest regions of Mexico, was not unimagineable. The Indios wanted to draw attention to their violent oppression and unabated exploitation by occupying 5 towns and nearly 500 farms. Nearly 3 years later, Nettie Wild spent eight months investigating the fragile peace and difficult conditions of life there. Wild interviewed Marcos, the Zapatistas' intellectual leader and Bishop Samuel Ruiz Garcia, a supporter of human rights for the Indios. Wild also interviewed large landowners whose terror organization "Peace and Justice" wages a violent campaign against the desparate struggles of the Zapatistas."@en
