http://schema.org/description

  • "The purpose of this project is to discuss representative examples of twentieth-century compositions for trumpet, as illustrated particularly in the Concertino for Trumpet by Knudage Riisager, Sonatine for Trumpet by Jean Francaix, and Concerto for Bb Trumpet by Wayne Bohrnstedt. The premise of the report is that the trumpet is, comparatively, a recently developed instrument and that solo literature of a high musical level has not been in great abundance. Although Renaissance and Baroque composers have left a voluminous trumpet literature so far as ensemble music is concerned, there has been a tremendous lack in the availability of solo literature of merit. Today trumpeters have regained the technical virtuosity common to their Baroque ancestors and instruments of today have achieved a technical refinement equal to this virtuosity. Modern composers have shown a renewed interest in the trumpet in symphonic music and the last twenty years have seen a gratifying increase in the availability of high quality solo literature for this instrument."
  • "Biographical data is presented for each of the selected composers--Riisager, Denmark's most prolific composer; Francaix, representing the French school; and Bohrnstedt, the promising young American composer. The general stylistic characteristics of their writing are described and their most outstanding contributions to modern music are discussed. Riisager arid Francaix represent neoclassicism and Bohrnstedt writes in neobaroque style with an extended harmonic vocabulary."
  • "Each of the selected compositions is analyzed in relation to form and tonality. The characteristic instrumental style and technical considerations are presented. The style of writing as reflected in the three representative composers' works is compared with differences and similarities stated. The mood, as reflected in the compositions for trumpet, is discussed and each composer's treatment of form, melody, harmony, rhythm, and meter is defined. Although many of the same devices are used by Riisager, Francaix, and Bohrnstedt, the way in which they are used in their works for trumpet show contrasting styles. All three composers have shown in their writing the expressive qualities of the trumpet, as well as the tonal contrasts and technical possibilities of this instrument."
  • "Additional selected twentieth-century compositions for trumpet are listed with descriptive information concerning the general style of writing, characteristic instrumental style, technical considerations, and publisher information."
