  • "For many people, especially in the English-speaking world, World War I in the east remains, to use Winston Churchill's phrase, "the unknown war." Over the past two decades, there has been a resurgence of interest in the Great War. Not surprisingly, however, most of this attention has been focused on the western front. In contrast to such a cornucopia of literature, the student of the eastern front in World War I has comparatively scant pickings from which to choose. The intent of this work is to fill in part of that gap by looking at the German-Austro-Hungarian offensive against the Russians at Gorlice-Tarnów in May 1915. This particular operation is of interest for several reasons. First, this was the first of the successful breakthrough battles after the onset of trench warfare. The Germans and Austro-Hungarians were able to restore a degree of mobility to warfare in the east that would be missing in the west for at least another two years. This would largely be done by artillery crushing the Russian defenses rather than by any major change in infantry tactics. Another interesting aspect of the offensive, in a tactical sense, was the use of infantry in exploiting a breakthrough. Although cavalry did get involved in the latter stages of the offensive, especially for the Austro-Hungarians, it played no real role in either creating the breakthrough or exploiting the gap. This study will attempt to provide some explanations as to why this was the case."
  • ""The first English-language study of the first of the great breakthrough battles of the war -- one of the Great War's critical campaigns. The book covers the initial attack of the German Eleventh Army and the Austro-Hungarian Third and Fourth Armies in Galicia as they outflanked the Russian position in the Carpathian Mountains that threatened Hungary"--Jacket."
