The old man and his book have been declared outdated and too theoretoical for the new era of police work. Fisher believes in his old friend's wisdom and begins to track the killer by using the book's old methods -- which lead him into some dark and rather surreal psychological predicaments. Full of references to Hitchcock and other noir classics, von Trier also established a style reminiscent of the German expressionist era. His use of sepia tones and a menacing set design add another dimension to the disturbed minds of the characters."
