Dodes' ka-den

This film, the title of which seeks to reproduce the sound of a trolley in motion, is Kurosawa's first motion picture in color. Weaving together the lives of a group of Tokyo slum dwellers with a mixture of reality and fantasy, Kurosawa gives an impassioned affirmation to life and to man's overcoming his adversities through hope and dreams. A Japanese critic has described Dodeskaden as 'a song of fantasy', a fairytale which strives to make its exaggerations seem natural without resorting to naturalism. Noel Burch sees it as Kurosawa's response to the younger generation of filmmak filmmakers, particularly Oshima. The title is primarily onomatopaeic referring to the sound of a tram on itstracks as imitated by a retarded boy. It may also have a religious significance."
