"The loose narrative intermingles the fantasy lives of the inhabitants of a shanty town in a series of small episodes with a range of tones from raucous humour to extreme pathos. It can be seen as the relocation of The Lower Depths in a more obviously symbolic parable of modern Japan. Through non-naturalistic use of colour, theatrical painted sets and stylised acting, Kurosawa seems to have been seeking for an aesthetic equivalent to the lives of his characters, people for whom illusion has replaced the harsh realities of the everyday world. A Japanese critic has described Dodeskaden as 'a song of fantasy', a fairytale which strives to make its exaggerations seem natural without resorting to naturalism. Noel Burch sees it as Kurosawa's response to the younger generation of filmmak filmmakers, particularly Oshima. The title is primarily onomatopaeic referring to the sound of a tram on itstracks as imitated by a retarded boy. It may also have a religious significance." . "Videodiscos DVD"@es . . . . . .
