Combining Flaherty's poetic sense of the people and Murnau's filmic and storytelling sensibilities, it is the story of two lovers doomed by tribal decree. The narrative, introduced by an old chief's scroll and carried along by a white man's diary, is divided into two parts, Paradise and Paradise Lost. Reri, a beautiful native girl, is consecrated to the gods by her people and forbidden to fall in love with or marry a mortal. She does fall in love despite the "tabu," and to prevent her from consummating the emotion, the island's holy man has the young woman snatched from the arms of her lover and spirited away on his ship. The heartbroken young man attempts to swim after them but becomes exhausted and perishes. Completion of the production was imperiled by bad weather, numerous accidents, illness and strife between the directors which caused Flaherty to abandon the project. Nonetheless, the film fuses elements from the directors' earlier films: the moving camera, the use of symbols, the play of light and shadow, and celebration of the human body, nature, and innocence.(Circulates)."
