Western Union

The construction of the overland telegraph in 1861 is embellished here by western mythology. The dark undertones in the conflict between two brothers points the way to the psychological western. Lang's distinctive interest in the balance between opposing forces and the overriding hand of fate centres on the Scott figure, a reformed outlaw opposing his brother, the leader of an outlaw gang.
