Scaffolding, self-regulated learning in the primary grades
The work of Lev Vygotsky offers a new synthesis of the philosophies of teacher directed learning and active child learning. This video provides examples of how learning can be structured so children are active learners while teachers use their superior knowledge base to meaningfully guide learning. Three essential elements of scaffolding are explained and demonstrated as children in urban classrooms become literate and ever more responsible for their weekly learning plans.

"Building on the ideas of Lev Vygotsky and Jerome Bruner, the consultants for this film worked with teachers in urban schools to foster self-regulated learning. This production presents both the theoretical underpinnings of their work and its results. Viewers visit busy classrooms where students are being helped to take responsibility for their education. The film offers useful viewpoints on constructivistic practice in elementary education."@en

"Even for the children who have spent much of the early years in group care, the transition to a real school is a major step. Each September we renew our hopes. These young children will become independent, self directed learners who will pursue educational avidly through out their there life times. But all too often, the happy anticipation of parents, students and teachers turns quickly to frustration when learning does not occur in hope for ways."@en
