Un médico brasileño graduado en Lisboa rechaza toda suerte de puestos prestigiosos cuando regresa a su país natal. Se retira a su pueblo para dedicarse a la investigación y la experimentación científica. Su especialidad es la psiquiatría. Con el fin de estudiar y remediar la locura construirá un manicomio en la calle más bonita de Itaguaí. El manicomio se conoce como La Casa Verde, por las 50 ventanas pintadas de verde que se abren en la fachada. La Casa Verde es un sueño hecho realidad gracias a las cuantiosas subvenciones del Ayuntamiento y a las aportaciones de los pacientes más adinerados. Una brillante metáfora de la psiquiatría, sus despropósitos, confusiones y miserias. Y una indagación en la realidad de que el hombre es inasible, excepto en la anormalidad.
