Satie remembered

  • "From the famous Gymnopedies to the scandalous ballet Relache, Satie's creations are paradoxical and extraordinary: they conceal their artistry and professionalism behind a veil of cultivated deceptions. Perhaps his most amazing creation, however, was the figure of Erik Satie, and the mask he created for himself was as deliberately ambiguous as his music. In dress he assumed the persona of a bourgeois functionary, complete with wing collar and umbrella. In art he was an iconoclast, the friend and inspirer of Cocteau, Brancusi, Man Ray and Les Six. He could be childish, resentful and irascible, yet people from all strands of society regarded him as polite and fascinating. His home after 1898 was a tiny squalid room in the dingy suburb of Arcueil, but he emerged from it daily, pristine, to walk to the lights and attractions of Paris - like an actor stepping out from the wings. Although his teachers at the Conservatoire regarded him as lazy and mediocre, he was revered by Debussy and Ravel. His strategies finally paid off after the First World War, when he was acknowledged as the leader of the French musical avant garde."
