Low-Eaton family papers
Business records of A.A. Low & Brothers, a New York City shipping and trading firm primarily dealing with Far Eastern tea, headed by Abiel Abbot Low (1811-1893). Collection includes insurance policies, 1828-1879; bills of lading, 1840-1878; crew rosters, 1851-1853; ship manifests; landing certificates; shipment receipts; and other papers. Also, personal letters sent to Abiel Abbot Low, his brother William Low, and other members of the Low family, dated mainly 1838-1866. Business records of James Waterbury Eaton (1855-1923), bookkeeper and partner of Abiel Abbot Low, refer chiefly to Low's firm and Eaton's other business ventures, in particular an adding machine company. Included are letters sent to the Higbie family of West Islip, L.I., to whom Eaton was related by marriage; letters sent by Eaton as treasurer of Christ Episcopal Church, West Islip; and blotters, daybooks, cashbooks, ledgers, and other business records, 1823-1849. Some papers pertain to William Eaton (d.1872), father of James W. Eaton, referring to William Eaton & Company, his general grocery and liquor business in Manhattan.
