The collection includes two manuscript versions of the book Toward a livable world: Leo Szilard and the crusade for nuclear arms, prepared by Hawkins, G. Allen Greb, and Gertrude Weiss Szilard. The recordings contain interviews Hawkins conducted with various persons for KPBS, including the artist Christo, Herbert Marcuse, Tom Stoppard, Herbert York, Bella Abzug, Margaret Burbidge, and Ramsey Clark. A number of the tapes are devoted to segments of the program Newsthink.
