"Negative associated with December 28, 1958, Arkansas Gazette article "Diggings Give Clue to the First Fort Smith," D1:2. Excavations on "Coke Hill" a slum on the outside of Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas, have turned up the remains of Old Fort Smith. Old Fort Smith is the original settlement created by the United States Army in 1817. During the excavation stone work was found, leading Lieutenant Clyde D. Dollar (1932-1983), to believe he had dug in the right spot. The site will continue to be excavated."
