  • "This is a qualitative inquiry into the shaping of the culture of a small community day school written from the principal's perspective. The intent of this study was to go beyond description to suggest relationships and to be interpretative in nature."
  • "Principals carry out, conduct "cultural shaping" by enacting three roles: Interpretive, Representational and Authenticating. In the Interpretive role the principal defines, elucidates, and interprets the cultural mission of the school along with the norms, values, and beliefs which would guide, the members' behavior as they strive to fulfill the cultural mission. The principal enacts the Representational role by revealing appropriate and desired behavior and orientations through his behavioral examples. In the Authenticating role the principal affirms the actions of individuals and groups who fulfill the norms and desired behavior. These roles are called for at each stage of the shaping process, the initiation phase, action phase and integration phase; most particularly during the action phase. The process also demands that the seven themes of expectation, empowerment, success and reward, shared purpose, pride, leadership, and support be accounted for. The culture is formed and its indicants are: expressive, sustaining, and assign meaning. The expressive nature of culture is its active ability to make known what is important through the norms, values, and beliefs that are proclaimed, celebrated, included, sanctioned or validated as well as ignored. The ability to instill a sense of belonging and efficacy within its membership, enabling the participants to feel a sense of ownership in the organization attests to the sustaining nature of culture. The nature of a culture to assign meaning or context is seen in its ability to provide balance and clarity. These indicants are reinforced through the seven themes."
