This study of early vernacular humanism compares the stylistic-methods of two important prose writers, Sir Thomas Elyot and Baldassare Castiglione. Analysis of diction, syntax, and larger issues of cultural history explains how each of these stylists incorporated the classical model into his vernacular tradition.
