  • "Nina turns forty and realizes her freedom."
  • "For Nina Askew, turning forty means freedom from the ex-husband whose career always came first and from their stuffy suburban home. Freedom to have her own apartment in the city, freedom to focus on what she wants for a change."

  • "Part basset, part beagle, all Cupid ... For Nina Askew, turning forty means freedom-from the ex-husband, freedom from their stuffy suburban home, freedom to focus on what she wants for a change. And what she wants is something her ex always vetoed-a puppy. A bouncy, adorable puppy. Instead she gets ... Fred. Overweight, middle-aged, a bit smelly and obviously depressed, Fred is light-years from perky. But he does manage to put Nina in the path of Alex Moore, her gorgeous, younger-by-a-decade neighbor. Alex seems perfect-he's a sexy, seemingly sane, surprisingly single E.R. doctor-but the age gap convinces Nina that anyone but Alex would be better relationship material. But with every silver-haired stiff she dates, the more she suspects it's the young, dog-loving doc she wants to sit and stay!"@en
  • "Nina Askew has always wanted a puppy, but her ex-husband had always refused. Following her divorce and facing her fortieth birthday, she heads to the pound in search of a cute, cuddly, perky puppy to cheer her up. But instead she is drawn toward an older, midsized, seemingly depressed mutt. With Fred now in her life, everything seems to change -- her priorities, her attitude and, unexpectedly, her love life when Fred brings Nina's much younger neighbor, Alex, into the picture. Despite all the waving red flags, Nina allows herself to consider the possibility that maybe somehow he'd miraculously be interested in an older woman with a depressed dog."@en
  • "For Nina Askew, turning forty means freedom? from the ex-husband whose career always came first, from their stuffy suburban home. Freedom to have her own apartment in the city, freedom to focus on what she wants for a change. And what she wants is something her ex always vetoed? a puppy. A bouncy puppy to cheer her up. Instead she gets?Fred. Overweight, smelly and obviously suffering from some kind of doggy depression, Fred is light-years from perky. But for all his faults, he does manage to put Nina face-to-face with Alex Moore, her gorgeous, younger downstairs neighbor. Alex looks great on paper? a sexy, seemingly sane, surprisingly single E.R. doctor who shares Fred?s abiding love for Oreos? but a ten-year difference in age, despite his devastating smile, is too wide a gap for Nina to handle. Ignoring her insistent best friend, some interfering do-gooders and the ubiquitous Fred? not to mention her suddenly raging hormones? Nina thinks anyone but Alex would be a better bet for a relationship. But with every silver-haired stiff she dates, the more she suspects it?s the young dog-loving doctor she wants to sit and stay!"@en
  • "Newly divorced after 16 years of marriage, Nina Askew is enjoying her freedom, her new job and her new apartment, when she decides to adopt a perky puppy. What she gets is a basset hound. (Okay, part beagle.) But her new dog, Fred, is definitely not perky; he's "part manic-depressive," "aero-dynamically challenged" and addicted to Oreos. But the good news is ... Fred brings home to Nina a sexy, downstairs neighbor, Alex Moore. (Sure beats bringing your slippers)"

  • "Considered by many to be a romantic comedy classic, Crusie's wry, witty story tells of three intersecting characters: Nina Askew, a newly divorced 40-year-old editor; Alex Moore, the young ER doctor who lives downstairs; and Fred, the depressed dog who brings them together. The novel is given a note-perfect reading by Susan Ericksen. Giving these characters distinct voices was likely a challenge; there are no accents to play with, and everyone's dialogue is snappy. The supporting characters stand out more--particularly the bored attendant at the pound, Nina's stuffy ex-husband, and her sassy elderly upstairs neighbor. Also worthy of note: the upbeat, jazzy score that begins and ends each disc sets the mood beautifully."@en
