"Fin de la tétralogie comprenant ##Le fleuve de l'éternité## (1971) et ##Le bateau fabuleux## (1974) publiés ensemble sous le premier titre, ainsi que ##Le noir dessein## (1977) chez le même éditeur. La mort n'étant qu'une indisposition temporaire, tous les humains ressuscitent le long d'un fleuve qui n'en finit pas. Dans le premier tome, Sir Richard Burton (explorateur décédé en 1890) cherche encore les sources du Nil; dans le deuxième, Mark Twain veut construire un bateau pour ce Mississipi; dans le troisième, le cow-boy Tom Mix et Jack London ainsi que d'autres réussissent à remonter le fleuve mais font face à un mystérieux inconnu. Dans ce dernier volet, qui se situe entre Gulliver et Tolkien pour la géographie, se retrouvent toutes les vedettes, en plus des susnommés: Alice, Mozart, Cyrano de Bergerac, Goering et le roi Jean dans une finale où tentent de se résoudre quêtes et mystères. Malgré tous les courants contraires et les affluents qui se perdent, une somme à la fois instructive et attrayante. Transposition, peut-être, du livre de Joseph Campbell: ##Le héros aux mille et un visages## (1949) ... Fallait le faire."
