ABC of our lives 50 years of television

"The ABC of Our Lives is a highly entertaining and nostalgic journey through the highs and lows of the past fifty years. It's the largely untold story of one of Australia's most influential cultural institutions, told by the familiar faces of ABC Television, the creative talent behind the camera, and hosted by the one and only John Clarke. Fifty years ago ABC Television was launched with high principles and lofty ideals. This was to be a national television service that would inform Australians about themselves, their country and the world around them. It had to be all things to all people across a big and diverse land - to educate and entertain. In November 1956 the opening night was a fiasco, and mercifully few Australians owned a television receiver. But within two decades ABC Television was a production powerhouse. From This Day Tonight and Bellbird, to Chequerboard and Countdown, ABC TV was an incubator for provocative new ideas and a training ground for the Australian television and film industry. At its best ABC TV has been a trailblazer, reaching into territory untouched by its commercial rivals. In the early days, dramas and operas were broadcast live, risky television at the best of times, but in the 1950s and 60s it was downright dangerous. Sets collapsed and actors forgot their lines. Audiences didn't seem to mind though, anything that flickered and moved they'd watch..."-- ABC website.
