The battle of Marathon

By using contemporary developments in archeology and anthropology, the author effectively establishes the site of the battle of Marathon, convincingly reconstructs the Greeks' decision to fight, how they fought, and successfully restores in general term the often-challenged credibility of the account Herodotus gave. However, his main contribution is a consequence of addressing one of Marathon's major anomalies, the hoplite phalanx' eight-stadia run, by contradicting some contemporary scholars and giving credence to Herodotus' account of the battle. What happened in Marathon and the hoplite origins of the "Western way of war" will benefit from reexamination; the confidence born on that day in 490 BC made Salamis conceivable, made Plataea possible, and foreshadowed the victories of Alexander the Great.

  • ""Beginning his analysis with the Athenians' first formal contact with the Persians in 507 B.C., [Peter] Krentz weaves together ancient evidence with travelers' descriptions, archaeological discoveries, geological surveys, and the experiences of modern reenactors and soldiers to tell his story. Krentz argues that before Marathon the Athenian army fought in a much less organized way than the standard view of the hoplite phalanx suggests: as an irregularly armed mob rather than a disciplined formation of identically equipped infantry"--Jacket."
