All titles are also available individually in print and as Ebooks. Comments on Philip Barnard and Stephen Shapiro's edition:. On Wieland, ""An impressive edition ... the most thoroughly satisfying historical and literary contextualization for the novel that I've ever encountered. • "Wieland, named by his father after a German nickname for the devil, inherits both his father's estate and religious susceptibility. His idyllic rural life is disrupted when he falls prey to the ventriloquist Carwin, who convinces Wieland that a divine voice is commanding him to slaughter his family. He is tried for the murders of his wife and children, for which he expresses no remorse. He later escapes prison in an attempt to kill his sister Clara, who narrates the story. Clara and Carwin have an ambiguous relationship of attraction and repulsion."@en
  • "Based on a terrifying real-life incident, this tale of seduction, insanity, and murder is one of America's earliest novels. It unfolds in rural Pennsylvania of the 1760s, where a religious fanatic massacres several members of his family. Part thriller and part psychological drama, it explores the corruption of law and order within a small community. The American Gothic style of author Charles Brockden Brown combines intellectual and supernatural elements - a literary mode that influenced later authors such as Poe and Hawthorne. Wieland, his best-known work, was acclaimed by John Keats as ""ver."@en

  • "Called a "remarkable story" by John Greenleaf Whittier and described by John Keats as "very powerful," Wieland, Charles Brockden Brown's disturbing 1798 tale of terror, is a masterpiece involving spontaneous combustion, disembodied voices, religious mania, and a gruesome murder based on a real-life incident. This Modern Library Paperback Classic includes Wieland's fragmentary sequel, Memoirs of Carwin the Biloquist, as well as several other important but hard-to-find Brockden Brown short stories, including "Thessalonica," "Walstein's School of History," and "Death of Cicero." This collection also reproduces the newspaper account of the murder that inspired Wieland. From the Trade Paperback edition."@en
  • "A thrilling tale that leads from ventriloquism and mania to a family murder and emotional breakdown, Charles Brockden Brown's Wieland; or The Transformation (1798) ties revolutionary-era Gothic themes to struggles over the politics of Enlightenment on both sides of the Atlantic. This edition of Wieland includes Brown's Memoirs of Carwin the Biloquist and writings on Cicero, as well as his key essays on history and literature, and selections from contemporary German and other texts that figure in the novel's background and in the charged atmosphere of the late 1790s. "An impressive edition."@en
  • "A terrifying account of the fallibility of the human mind and, by extension, of democracy itself, Wieland brilliantly reflects the psychological, social, and political concerns of the early American republic. In the fragmentary sequel,Memoirs, Brown explores Carwin's bizarre history as a manipulated disciple of the charismatic utopian Ludloe."@en
