The dances of Carousel

Agnes de Mille and Gemze de Lappe analyze and discuss choreographic and dramatic aspects of three dances from the musical Carousel: the dance following the song "June is bustin' out all over," the hornpipe "Blow high, blow low," and the Act II ballet (Louise on the beach). Each dance is performed in full by members of the Nashville Ballet, in costume onstage to piano accompaniment, and excerpts of the dances are shown to illustrate points made by de Mille and de Lappe. De Lappe and Michael Phillips also demonstrate key movements and phrases in the studio, in practice clothes. The discussion also covers Miles White's costumes for the original production of Carousel in 1945, as well as Jane Greenwood's costumes for the Nashville revival. De Mille reminisces about the memorable performances of Annabelle Lyon and Bambi Linn, who respectively created the roles of Hannah and Louise; she also recalls de Lappe's interpretation of Louise. In conclusion, de Lappe describes the dance and dramatic qualities she seeks in casting dancers for revivals of the musical.
