  • "Fluorescence spectroscopy has grown by leaps and bounds in lhe past few decades. Recent advances in commercially available instrumentation and in fluorescent derivatizing agents have opened up possibilities previously unattainable. These developments have naturally encouraged many scientists from a wide variety of fields to become actively involved in lhe use of fluorescence to solve chemical, physical, biological, and geological problems as well as to delve deeper into lhe nature of lhe fluorescence process itself. Along with lhe upsurge of interest in fluorescence there comes a need for an appreciation of lhe nature of fluorescence-how it originates, how it is influenced by molecular and environrnental factors, how it is measured, and where it can be applied. To this end, lhe authors have attempted to compose a text that will introduce to lhe uninitiated and to those with limited experience with fluorescence lhe physical, chemical, and instrumental features of fluorescence spectroscopy as well as a broad, but not necessarily exhaustive, sampling of its range of applications, especially in light of recent developments in lhe field."
