Discovering ancient cultures

A video set consisting of programs originally broadcast on NOVA between 1993 and 1996. The films provide new clues about some of the world's most interesting ancient cultures. In the first program, Egyptologist Mark Lehner reveals construction secrets of the ancient pyramids by actually building a small pyramid. Joining forces with Roger Hopkins (of TV's This old house), Lehner tests clever and sometimes bizarre pyramid construction theories. The second program investigates the myths and facts about the Vikings' historic exploration of North America. The third program provides a glimpse of life among the Yanomami in a remote part of the Amazon rain forest. This endangered tribe's culture is built on fierce rivalries and communal harmony. The program documents two villages attempting to reconcile past differences by sharing in a great feast. It looks at family drama within the villages, and it features shamans using hallucinogens as they commune with the spirit world, practice magic to combat modern disease, and oversee rituals for the dead.
