  • "Derek Jarman's stylised biopic about the life of the early Renaissance Italian painter Caravaggio, who died in 1610. Caravaggio (Nigel Terry) uses street thug Ranuccio Thomasoni (Sean Bean) as a model for his erotic paintings of St John, and a homosexual attraction between the two men is gradually revealed. Jarman's film includes deliberate anachronisms, including mortobikes and typewriters in seventeenth century Italy."

(Mereghetti)."@it
  • "A film based on the life and art of Caravaggio, the greatest of the Italian post-Renaissance painters. Centers on the love triangle between the artist, his model Ranuccio and Lena, Ranuccio's low-life partner."
  • "The film is a fictionalized re-telling of the life of Baroque painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Jarman's film is involved with a love triangle involving Caravaggio, Lena, and Ranuccio and dwells upon Caravaggio's use of street people, drunks and prostitutes as models for his intense, usually religious paintings. As with Caravaggio's use of contemporary dress for his Biblical figures, Jarman depicts his Caravaggio in a bar lit with electric lights and depicts other characters using calculators."@en
  • "Not a conventional bio-pic, but the portrait of the homosexual artist as a 'murderer imaged as a god'. Caravaggio, according to Jarman, identified with the murderer in St. Matthew. The artist's extreme self analysis becomes self destruction. In the film the young painter lies dying, his mind drifting back over his short life of intense passion, a triangle formed with two of his models. One was the inspiration for his repeated portrayal of the assassin in pictures of martyrdom, the other the model for Mary Magdalene and the dead virgin. The potential for feverish melodrama yields to the simplicity of Jarman's approach of explicitly referring to the process of fictionalising in a series of 'tableau vivant'. The paintings are the source of the film's characters as Jarman seeks to bridge the gap of centuries (he uses the sound of contemporary Rome) in recreating 'many details of my own life'"@en
  • "SUMMARY: "This beautiful visionary art film based on the director's take of the life of Caravaggio was worth the almost 7 years it took to make it. Derek Jarman had the brilliant sense to use Nigel Terry and Sean Bean as the lovers in this meditation on sexuality, criminality and art. This film is more of a fictionalization on Caravaggio using the artist's works as a way to pursue the story of the artist. It is beautiful, as are the actors and actresses, and Sean Bean is a revelation in this very early role, as he plays Ranucio, the love interest of Caravaggio. When he is on screen he steals the movie, as his animal magnetism, sexual energy, and wild persona grip the film and propel the story forward. This is an adult film with homosexual themes and might not be for everyone, but if one is adult and has a sense of taste, and loves art movies, this is a 10 out of 10." IMDB"
