http://schema.org/description

  • "Although the Norman Conquest of 1066 swept away most of the secular and ecclesiastical leaders of pre-Conquest England, one positive outcome for English society was its effect on the religious patronage of Anglo-Saxon monastic foundations, which this study explores. Dr. Cownie analyses the pattern of gifts to religious houses on both sides of the Channel, looking at the reasons why they were made; she argues that they demonstrate the plural nature of the Anglo-Norman aristocracy, large sections of which had interests not Anglo-Norman but essentially either English or Norman. Through its systematic analysis of a central aspect of the relationship between England and Normandy, the study thus makes an important contribution to an understanding of Anglo-Norman society."
