The plural I the teaching of writing

A freshman composition course taught to a group of science majors at Case Institute of Technology was based on the premise that learning to write involves a stylistic response to style. This book presents, through the eyes of the course's teacher, a novelistic account of teaching and learning. Thirty assignments that were given to the students are presented, each followed by a narration of the continuing dialogue that took place between the teacher and students. The assignments were cumulative, centering on the theme of professionalism and amateurism and exposing students to the tricks and formulas they used when writing their first papers. The aim was for the students to write not "what the teacher wanted" but "what they want for themselves when they are proud of themselves for having wanted it." (Cc).
