Memoirs and selected letters

Ulysses Simpson Grant (1822-1885) was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio to Jesse Root and Hannah Simpson Grant. The Grant family had originally moved from Connecticutt to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and, later, to Ohio. Grant grew up in Ohio and in 1839 entered West Point where he graduated 21st in the class of 1843. He participated in the Mexican-American War and, in 1848, married Julia Dent. He then resigned from the military and spent the next decade at odd jobs. In 1861 he again joined the Army and eventually moved up to command the Army of the Potomac. In 1865 Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattax, Virginia thus ending the Civil War. He was heralded as the hero of the north. In 1868 Grant was elected President of the United States, a position he held until 1877. The years after public office were filled with a world tour, activities as an American Statesman and then several years of failing health. Descendants live in the United States.
