We got next the WNBA's inaugural season

Given impetus by the gold medal run from the 1996 USA Basketball Women's National Team at the Summer Olympics, the WNBA began its first season on June 21, 1997. The league began with eight teams, and under the marketing slogan "We Got Next" stars Rebecca Lobo, Lisa Leslie, and Sheryl Swoopes came to the fore. In the league's first season, Leslie's LA Sparks underperformed, while Swoopes sat out much of the season due to her pregnancy. The WNBA's true star in 1997 was MVP Cynthia Cooper, Swoopes' teammate on the Houston Comets. The Comets defeated Lobo's NY Liberty in the first WNBA Championship. This commemorative film presents a précis of that exciting inaugural season.
