Transportation

Pictures showing modes of transportation from the American colonial period to the present. The drawings, cartoons, photographs, posters, and other illustrations are almost all from the period that they represent. They explain that early in the 19th century, rivers and turnpikes seemed to be the answers to the nation's need for improved passenger and trade routes; then the completion of the Erie Canal touched off a canal-building boom which was also the era of the river steamboat. The railroad was also a phenomenon of the 19th century transportation revolution; its great impact on American life is portrayed. Also included are scenes showing the domination of automobile and airplane transportation in 20th century America and their complex effect on our society.
