Developing a matrix for assessing values in curriculum theory

http://schema.org/description

  • "Based on the work of Turner in Sociology, a new theoretical understanding of the methodology of constructing a theory was designed. It is possible to go beyond Turner and use even less advanced levels of abstraction to form a theoretical means for analysis and integration of a system. This can be accomplished by relating middle-range propositions in a hypothetical analytic model, and then testing the relationships to discern if the analytic model is faithful to the propositions using a test of coherence (see discussion of warrants in chapter one). Some form of analytic model made up of middle range propositions, based on empirical generalizations and causal models is necessary for a theory to be sufficiently broad in scope and yet testable in practice. This new formal understanding of statements and the levels of abstraction can be applied to the theoretical matrix of values in education. The new methodology is used in chapter four for doing assessment of the four positions."
  • "Philosophical values are at the foundation of any comprehensive curriculum theory. However, no work exists which presents the axiological foundation for curriculum theory. This research focuses on the relationship between values and curriculum by examining five values theorists (Rawls, Rokeach, Kohlberg, Wildavsky, and Burbules). An analysis of the values and methodologies of the theorists leads to four approaches to finding values: developmental, empirical, intuition based, and cultural."
  • "It was necessary to create a new matrix for comparing the four major positions. The elements of the matrix include the X factors of historic continuity vs contemporary reference, and the Y factors are individual freedom vs common interest. The theorists are then analyzed as to the specific strength of their foundational values in light of the elements of the matrix."
