Altgeld of Illinois : a record of his life and work

John Peter Altgeld (1847-1902) was born at Nieder Selters, Nassau, Germany, the son of John Peter and Mary Lanehart Altgeld. His family immigrated to the United States in 1848 and settled in Washington Township, Richland County, Ohio. He enlisted in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry in May 1864 and was mustered out in September 1864. He migrated west working in Kansas, Texas, and Iowa. He studied law in Iowa and was admitted to the Andrew County, Iowa, Bar in 1871. He moved to Chicago in 1871. He married Emma Ford at Washington, Ohio, in 1875. They lived at Chicago, where he was a lawyer and a judge. He was governor of Illinois, 1893-1897. He was involved in national politics. He died at Joliet, Illinois, where he collapsed shortly after giving a speech.
