The romance of the Milky Way : and other studies & stories
This volume of engrossing essays and odds and ends from the always-interesting writer and amateur social scientist Lafcadio Hearn encompasses a number of topics, including various folk stories from Japan and musings on literature and philosophy. Hearn's wide-ranging intellect is on full display, and as always, his thoughts are rendered in an inimitably lyrical style.
"Published posthumously in 1905, this book contains some of Hearn's uncollected work and is a charming interpretation of Japanese culture. In "The romance of the Milky Way," Hearn examines the stories behind the age-old Tanabata festival. "Goblins" discusses poetry and some supernatural subjects particular to Japanese literature. "Ultimate questions," is a lyrical response to Herbert Spencer's philosophy. Other essays include "Stranger than fiction" and "A letter from Japan," written in 1904, describing how Japanese society dealt with its war with Russia."

"This delightful book presents seven pieces from the rich Hearn heritage. They are a natural outgrowth of Hearn's peerless philosophy."@en
