Channels/inserts

Cunningham and Atlas divided the studio into sixteen possible areas for dancing and used chance methods based on the I Ching to determine the order in which these spaces would be used, the number of dancers to be seen and events that would occur in each space. Atlas employed cross-cutting and animated mattes or wipes to indicate a simultaneity of dance events occurring in different spaces, as well as to allow for diversity in the continuity of the image.

  • "Suite du travail de Cunningham et Atlas développant la grammaire de la danse filmée."
  • "This work was a dance shot for film at the Cunningham studio. Staging for Channels/Inserts was divided among the main studio, the small studio, and the office area. Cunningham employed the use of chance operations to decide the order in which each space would be used, whether action would occur in more than one location at a time, and how many dancers would be involved. The piece was divided into sixteen sections, each varying in length. One of the most striking sections began with a series of brief, masterfully executed solos for the men of the company, filmed in the main studio, followed by a shot of the women in the small studio, laughing and chatting amongst themselves, then back to the main studio for a second round of male solos. Music was composed by David Tudor, and costume design was by Charles Atlas."@en
  • "Channels/Inserts is a continuation of the process by which Cunningham and Atlas are developing the grammar of filmdance. Cunningham was interested in the possibility of placing the cast and the scenes in such a way as to give the sense of dual events happening concurrently."@en
