Aus Arabien stammt der Prophet Mohammed, in den arabischen Städten Mekka und Medina liegen die wichtigsten religiösen Zentren der Muslime. Allerdings konnten die Araber beim Auftreten des Propheten schon auf anderthalb Jahrtausende ihrer Geschichte zurückblicken. Seit dem 9. Jahrhundert v. Chr. bestimmten sie die Geschicke des Vorderen Orients mit, um im 7. Jahrhundert n. Chr. zur Grossmacht aufzusteigen und durch die Expansion des Kalifenreiches die Grenzen der arabischen Welt weit über den Vorderen Orient hinaus nach Nordafrika und Spanien, ja bis nach Frankreich hinein zu erweitern. Die Geschichte der Araber ist seitdem mit der der Europäer eng verknüpft. Die europäische Wissenschaft und Kunst des Mittelalters wäre ohne die glänzende Kultur der arabischen Reiche nicht denkbar. Erst in der Neuzeit wurde das Verhältnis von einer zunehmenden Hegemonie Europas geprägt, die bis heute die Beziehungen zwischen westlicher und arabischer Welt belastet.
