In this process, DNA fragments of different sizes are separated from each other by virtue of their different migrational velocities in agarose gel under the influence of an electric field. The separated fragments are then made visible by ultraviolet light after the gel is stained by a solution of ethidium bromide. The sizes of the various DNA fragments can easily be determined by the distances they have travelled in the gel.

""This laboratory training video [on recombinant DNA techniques] has been produced so that the student can see procedures performed before actually doing the experiments" ([John D. Morrey])."
