Before the gates of excellence : Abraham Flexner and education, 1866-1918

Born in 1866, Abraham Flexner became one of America's foremost leaders in education. Despite his major accomplishments, Flexner has been neglected by students of intellectual and educational history. This study assesses the Flexner legacy from his earliest writings to the survey of the Gary school system. It takes the form of an intellectual biography setting out to explore the relationship between Flexner's educational philosophy, his inner life, and the environment in which he lived. It relies upon Flexner's writings, those of his contemporaries, and manuscript materials--notably those at the Rockefeller Archive Center and the Library of Congress.
