"Luke R. Haughey, head of the family in America, was born near Lough Orn, seven miles north of Newry, County, Down, Ireland, May 12, 1820."--P. 13. He was the son of Luke and Nancy Rogers Haughey, who came to America in 1836 and both died at Lockport, Illinois in about 1860. He was also the grandson of Patrick (d. about 1826) and Nancy Skivington Haughey who held " ... three acres on the Crown land of Cargochbawn, Parish of Donaghmore, Barony of Upper Iveagh, County Down"--P. 27., Ireland. In 1850 Luke R. Haughey married Mary Talbot, who was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland, on February 11, 1834 and died in Kalamazoo, Michigan on 2 October 1906. Luke R. served in the war with Mexico, the Civil War and later with General Custer in the west where he remained "for some time, fortunately returning just prior to the great tragedy on the Rosebud."--P.16. As a veteran of military service in the war with Mexico, Luke received a bounty of 160 acres of land " ... in the northeastern part of Kalamazoo County, Michigan."--P. 15. where they farmed. He died in Battlecreek, Michigan on 25 June 1916. "In consecrated ground, Catholic portion of Riverside Cemetery at Kalamazoo, they now lay side by side."--P. 18. Descendants lived in Michigan, Colorado, Kansas, Illinois, Wisconsin, New York, Missouri, Pennsylvania and elsewhere.
