The Princess Casamassima by Henry James

The illegitimate and impoverished son of a dressmaker and a nobleman, Hyacinth Robinson has grown up with a strong sense of beauty that heightens his acute sympathy for the inequalities that surround him. Drawn into a secret circle of radical politics he makes a rash vow to commit a violent act of terrorism. But when the Princess Casamassima--beautiful, clever and bored--takes him up and introduces him to her own world of wealth and refinement, Hyacinth is torn. He is horrified by the destruction that would be wreaked by revolution, but still believes he must honour his vow.

  • "An intelligent but confused young London bookbinder, Hyacinth Robinson, becomes involved in radical politics and a terrorist assassination plot."
  • "Hyacinth Robinson is an orphan raised by a spinster dressmaker. As a young man, he gets caught up in radical politics and a terrorist plot. He inadvertently meets the title character, who is a revolutionary herself, and who introduces Hyacinth to a world of refinement and privilege. Eventually, he begins to rethink his role in the movement, and his conundrum forces him to act with fatal consequences."
  • "Amanda Pynsent has adopted the illegitimate son of her old friend who is now sentenced to prison for killing the boy's father. When the child grows older he becomes involved with a revolutionary woman who uses his love for her own purposes. Atypical of James' other work, this piece explores extreme politics and violent revolution. It stands out amongst his canon for characters that are not wealthy and are out of choices. Critically, the novel is often paired with The Bostonians, which also includes politics, although of a less volatile nature."@en

  • ""Counter When Henry James chose to, as he did in The Princess Casamassima, he could write about the political turbulence of his era with astonishing excitement and directness. The London underworld of terrorist conspiracies that entangles his hero, Hyacinth Robinson, comes alive under his pen with a violence that seems, 100 years later, only too familiar." http://www.loc.gov/catdir/description/random0410/91053000.html."
