The Father and the Son. A study in Johannine thought
This book does not attempt to settle questions of authorship or date, or to suggest fresh critical analyses or rearrangements of the text. It takes the book as substantially a whole; a religious document, coming in the main from the pen of a single Christian writer, who lived near the end of the first century A.D. It then proceeds to analyze with some care what appears to be the author's central interest and message, his special conception of fatherhood and sonship, as something to be seen and known only in the relations between Him who is called the Father in the pages of the Gospel, and Him who is called the Son. This conception is somewhat different from that which is generally connected with God's Fatherhood in the New Testament. A comparison of the Fourth Gospel with other New Testament documents makes it probable that this specific form of the doctrine is the center of the actual teaching of Jesus, and has been reproduced in its original purity in the Fourth Gospel. - Foreword.
