"Summary: Admired by Albert Einstein and reviled by Winston Churchill, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948), called the Mahatma, was one of the most remarkable political figures of the 20th century. Famous as the prophet of non-violent resistance, he nevertheless challenged the might of the British raj in India and led his people to independence. This film, compiled from newsreels and archival material, presents a brief biographical overview of his life, from his years in South Africa, where he formulated his programme of "soul force", to his assassination by a Muslim fanatic on January 30th, 1948. It discusses both his successes and failures, recalling specific political campaigns and their aims. It also refers to his greatest disappointment, the partitioning of India into seperate Hindu and Muslim states. The film's commentary was written by New York Times correspondent Paul Grimes and is read by Henry Fonda."
