  • "An early example of the theological debates of the period dealing with the Mass. In the present work the reformed theologian, Leo Jud (1482-1542), debates with the Catholic preacher Matthias Kretz (1480-1543) who had been appointed preacher at Augsburg; "succeeding Urbanus Rhegius, whose sympathy for the refonmers he did not at all share. The citizens of Augsburg were shifting their loyalties in growing numbers, and in 1524 Kretz was repeatedly prevented from preaching" (Contemporaries of Erasmus, 11, p. 274). Kretz had published an often reprinted sermon on the Mass the previous year. Zwingli had recommended Jud's appointment to the parish of St. Peter's in Zurich (1523) where he quickly establishing himself as one of Zurich's leading churchmen. Jud became Zwingli's closest associate while he lived and after the refonmer's death he faithfully upheld his theological doctrine (Contemp. of Erasmus, 11, p. 249). Zwingli wrote a prefatory letter addressed to the Christian Brotherhood of Augsurg (Ain Epistel Huldrich Zwinglis an alle Christenliche brüder zü Augspurg. M.D.XXV) where the debate was supposedly held. Finsler's Zwingli bibliography lists a Zurich edition appearing in the same year as this Augsurg edition. Both are rare."
