Of varied ages and backgrounds, they have achieved success in a variety of careers: as the Yukon legislature's first native woman minister, as a deck hand on a fishing boat, as a teacher, a lawyer, and an Indian chief. • "Beginning with a tribute to the abiding influence of grandmothers, this film by Native American director Carol Geddes focuses on five Native women from across Canada, representing varying ages and backgrounds, who have achieved success in a variety of careers. For Sophie Pierre, chief of the St. Mary's Band in British Columbia, being a good manager and administrator is crucial to her position. Sophie handles negotiations with the government and coordinates her tribe's ranching and timber ventures. Overcoming a lack of self-confidence and a string of low-paying, unsatisfying jobs, Lucille McLeod of Edmonton now counsels Native women regarding employment and teaches confidence-building strategies. Once a single mother struggling to raise her children with menial jobs, Margaret Joe persevered to become a practical nurse and is today the first Native woman to become a minister in the Yukon government. The camera follows Margaret as she visits with her constituents. Corinne Hunt of the Kwakiutl Nation operates hydraulic equipment aboard a commercial fishing boat. When not on the open seas, Hunt studies anthropology as a way of maintaining her culture. Roberta Jamieson, Canada's first Native Indian woman lawyer was born and still resides in Ontario's Six Nations Reserve. She is seen with her husband and daughter, addressing the Indian Self-Government Conference and receiving accolades for community work."
