"Le livret est inspiré du Livre des Juges. Les Hébreux sont à Gaza, rassemblés autour de Samson qui est l'âme de la résistance contre les Philistins et qui leur promet une prompte délivrance. Le satrape Abimélech interrompt leurs prières et ose railler Dieu. Il est tué par Samson ainsi que toute sa suite. Gaza est libérée. Les femmes des Philistins dansent et l'une d'elles, Dalila, invite Samson à sa demeure. Celui-ci se laisse séduire par Dalila qui lui ravit le secret de sa force, lui fait couper les cheveux durant son sommeil et le livre aux Philistins. Prisonnier et aveugle, Samson tourne une meule dans la prison de Gaza. On l'amène bientôt au temple pour qu'il rende hommage aux idoles. Là, il supplie Dieu de lui rendre sa force première, se fait conduire entre les énormes colonnes qui soutiennent l'édifice, les ébranle et périt sous les ruines avec tous les Philistins."
